What are Acne Scars and Large Pores?

Acne Scars Classification

Acne Scars Classification

Poorly controlled acne can often result in disfiguring acne scars and large pores and a significant impact ones appearance and self-esteem. Keeping your skin well conditioned and preventing active acne breakouts is the best way to prevent future scars.

Acne scars and large pores result when there is damage to the skin's normal anatomy and structure. Scars can take different forms (rolling scars, depressed scars, pitted scars, etc), each requiring different approaches to treatment, and often a combination of different treatments give the best results.

Acne scars and large pores treatments

Acne Scars and Large Pores Treatment with TCA CROSS (Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars)

The CROSS (Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars) technique is a tailored ‘fill and smooth’ approach to acne scars, and is particularly suited to filling out ‘pitted’ or ‘cratered’ old acne scars that are traditionally difficult to improve. It uses high concentrations of trichloroacetic acid (TCA), applied in a highly focused manner within the atrophic ice-pick scars. This spares the surrounding normal skin, and causes a precise and controlled inflammatory reaction followed by new collagen formation, reducing the depth of these pitted scars, and cosmetic improvement to the appearance of the scars. The CROSS unique technique is virtually painless, and is a focused skin resurfacing and stimulatory process to fill out deep, pitted scars with permanent effect. The CROSS technique remains one of our most successful and popular treatments.

Acne scars is further improved when combined with laser stimulatory treatments for pore tightening and general smoothening and control of active acne.

Acne Scars and Large Pores Treatment with Laser Skin Resurfacing (Fractional CO2, Erbium MLP)

Lasers are especially useful in smoothening rolling scars, or larger affected areas, improving overall texture and improving the appearance of acne scars and wrinkles. We use a combination of Erbium MLP (Micro Laser Peel) and Fractional Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Lasers to resurface the face and promote regeneration of new skin. It is a superior preferred rejuvenating procedure for the busy professional "on the go", providing effectiveness, comfort, safety and reduced downtimes for the treatment of acne scars and wrinkles. A laser is a relatively superficial resurfacing modality that incrementally improves texture with multiple treatments.

Acne Scars and Large Pores Treatment with Subcision with Dermal Fillers

Subcision is a method of releasing deep tethered scars (e.g. Rolling scars) with a specialised needle. Dermal fillers may be placed under the newly subcised scars, to lift and promote new tissue growth, preventing them from becoming depressed again.

Acne Scars and Large Pores Treatment with Chemical peels

A variety of superficial to deep chemical peels are available to treat active acne, prevent future breakouts, and help with reducing scar tissue. The peels provide gentle, gradual improvement of acne by clearing pores and reducing oil production over a series of treatments. Peels also refresh the skin and enhance its overall appearance.

The Sciton MicroLaserPeel™ is ideal for patients looking for better results than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels can offer but with little downtime to spare. This peel removes fine lines and wrinkles, and leaves vibrant smoother, healthier skin for a more youthful appearance.
Known as the weekend procedure with immediate, lasting results, this Erbium Yag laser is one of the foremost precision lasers available today, minimising discomfort for perfect coverage and uniform ablation that was not possible with other laser systems.

The procedure is individually tailored to your needs, effectively treating wrinkles, scars, keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions), pigmentation problems and overall sun damage

Acne Scars and Large Pores Treatment with the eMatrix™ Sublative Rejuvenation

The eMatrix™ Sublative Rejuvenation uses a new approach to treating acne scars and wrinkles, called sublation. It works by heating thousands of tightly packed dots of skin uniformly. What is new and different about this method of treatment is that the deeper layers of the skin are achieving higher temperatures than the superficial layers. As a result there is more tightening, the treated dots are much less visible and for a shorter time than with the fractionated laser resurfacing. Therefore, there is less downtime and less need for makeup coverage.

In clinical trials conducted by leading aesthetic physicians, sublative rejuvenation treatment can improve:

  • Wrinkles

  • Skin laxity

  • Scars

  • Acne scars

  • Textural irregularities

  • Tone

Superficial skin lesions The eMatrix™ system with Syneron’s unique Sublative Rejuvenation™ treatment goes beyond fractional methods for skin resurfacing. Sublative Rejuvenation is a non-laser and non-light−based treatment that utilises RF sublation—fractionated bipolar radio frequency technology—to place the heat energy effectively into the dermis where it can produce significant dermal impact with minimal epidermal disruption. Between 2 and 3 treatments are necessary for optimal results. The procedure is faster to perform and generally less uncomfortable than Fractionated Laser Resurfacing. And because it is not a light based treatment, it works safely on all skin types (even darker skins) with less risk of thermal side effects.

What Should I Do?

Scar treatment is clearly not as straightforward as it once was. With the increasing understanding of scar tissue, new technology and their effect on these scars, optimal results are best seen with a combination of procedures. The first step is identifying what type of scarring is present, then selecting the treatments in a reasonable sequence that would ensure each treatment benefits as much of all the scars present as possible.

As such, a meticulous consult and pre-treatment plan should be established before commencing any therapy. Multiple modality treatment is invariably more expensive, but ensures you do not plateau after several sessions of poorly selected therapies.

Acne scar management is, effectively, permanent. The time and effort you place in the treatment of your scars is ultimately an investment that you will find worth your while, as much as we do in helping you regain that skin you once lost.
